Dedicated to my family.
They are the answer to every
question, I ask.
Who?
Why?
What?
When?
Where?
How?
“Anything that happens, happens.
Anything that, in happening,
causes something else to happen,
causes something else to happen.
Anything that, in happening,
causes itself to happen again,
happens again.
It doesn't necessarily
do it in chronological order, though.”
~ Douglas Adams
Who?
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!” scream the child-like voices trapped in the trees. They surround the park with their screams of terror and pain.
“Go away! Go away!” Kaylor screams, but they don't stop or leave. Slowly they separate themselves from the trees. Their faces ruined. Tiny, mauled hands reach for her, tugging on her shirt and pant legs. Little deformed bodies wrap themselves around her legs. Wounded arms grasp her waist. She looks down, trying to disentangle herself from them. Pulling them off one by one, but they keep coming back like cockroaches swarming around newly discovered food.
Kaylor spots a little, white blond head. It belongs to the small body closely wrapped around her right leg. The one child she hasn't been able to pull off of her. Pausing because the child's hair, so like her own, is long. It reminds her of her child. Her daughter Arley.
Though Kaylor knows what is to happen next, she can't seem to stop herself from asking, “Arley?”
“Mama? Mama. Mama!” the baby girl chants, soon all the children chant it. Some are saying the word as a question, as if they don't know what it means or they are simply wondering if Kaylor is in fact their mother. Some are yelling the word as if cursing her, and some are hoping. Hoping she would be their mama, hoping she would save them.
“Save us, Mama! Save us!” they shout as they start grabbing her, ripping her clothes. Trying to pull her closer. They smother her. She can't breath or move. With the last of her breath she screams.
That is how Kaylor woke, screaming until her throat and ears ached. The banging at the door made it worse. Banging at the door? Had she screamed loud enough for her downstairs neighbor, Randen, to hear? Crap! Her apartment complex is small but the only one who has ever heard her scream was Randen.
