I am not a liar! I was just filled with terror! But why do you believe that I have lost control of my thoughts? What do you refer to? You say that I am mad but how it is possible that a mad person does what I did. Apparently, I could see things I had never seen before. I could dream things I had never dreamed before.
Open your mind and listen! Listen! I am about to tell you the meaning of your nightmares. I will tell you how it happened.
September 15th, in the summer of 1835, it was 11:00 PM. The sky was dark, and some drops of water were falling on the dry grass. The streets were in a dreadful silence. I could hear the sound of water falling on the pavement, trees, and houses' roofs. And there I was, sitting on a bench near the park, using my favorite black suit. I was just resting after a long day as usual. There it was, when for the first time I heard that creepy voice which went and returned as the echo in a deep cave. I did not care about it; I supposed it was the wind hissing through the bench, or an animal hidden behind the bush. I saw the old watch that was on the top of the church. It was 11:59 PM, when the odd voice came back, but this time it was different. It got me scared. I remember that I could only understand 2 words, one of them was my name “Mr. Tomason” and the another word was “kill.” After hearing that voice twice, I stood up and ran away while the drops of water hitting my face. Dogs barked everywhere. I felt someone was looking at me while I was running. Desolate streets, dogs barking, and plash of water were the only I could see. I was confused and scared. "Is this a nightmare?" I thought.
After I got home, I set the clock at 6 AM and I tried to sleep. “Detective Smith, it was the most horrible night I have had” I could not stop hearing that voice whispering in my ears. After some long minutes, I fell asleep.
When I woke up, I thought again if that had been a nightmare, but it was not. I just thought about that girl. Anne, the gorgeous woman who lived in front of my house. I felt a deep desire of seeing her. My hands were shaking while I was sitting on my bed. “I love Anne, you will be mine” I shouted. While I touched my pillow, I could just feel her face on my hands. Indeed, I fell in love with her. And I had to tell her. I was sure she would accept. So, I dressed up, elegant as usual. I bought some chocolates for her, because I knew women love chocolates.
It was 10:00 AM, and I was sitting on the white bench in from of her house. Drops of sweat ran down my forehead. I was really scared, because since my wife died, I have not talked to a girl with these intentions. There were not trees around the bench. It was a sunny day; even I could feel the sun just above me. But “I love her, and she loves me” I cried myself. After 30 minutes sitting on the bench, the door opened. Yes, there she was, dressing her cherry red skirt, beautiful as usual. I felt my heart was about to burst. My hands did not stop shaking. I hold the chocolates in my left hand, and opened my mouth to say her name. But a grey car got there at first. I was just staring at them through the bushes. A handsome man got out of the car and quickly kissed her. And yes, Detective Smith, he kissed her lips. After being on the top of the world, I fell down badly. I smashed the chocolates and threw them away. “Why me?” I thought while drops of tears fell over the ground. I loved her, and I wanted to marry her. But after that day, everything changed.
When I came back home, I sat down waiting for them near the window. I was staring through a narrow hole for about 2 hours. The birds singing on the top of the trees just made me feel uncomfortable. The sun started to hide behind the dark clouds. It brought memories from the last unspeakable night. While drops of water started to fall down, I was filled with terror again. The dark clouds have hidden the sun completely. The small bedroom beamed because of lightnings which lighted the whole town. I just remember that I took a knife and everything got dark.
“Mr. Tomanson, some neighbors saw you running across the street near Miss Anne’s house” Mr. Smith said. “you opened the door and got inside”
“The next day, she was found, indeed parts of her. She was cut into pieces and put inside a black bag” detective Smith said. “You killed her cruelty, but that is not all; Anne’s boyfriend was burnt alive. The body was just ash and burnt bones”
“How did you do that Mr. Tomanson?” detective Smith asked me. “You were stubborn with her”
“I do not know how it happened, as I told you it was not me, and you have to look for the real killer” I cried.
“Let me see your medical exams please” Detective Smith shouted.
“Yes, of course, here you are. After you read this, can I go home?
“What the hell! The detective Smith mumbled.
Epilogue Mr. Tomanson died two years later after several attempts of exorcism, rituals, and prayers; his body was found with two thin stakes through his eyes, his nails were ripped off frightfully. He died because of the two wounds caused by the stakes .
People believed that mental problems were caused by evil demons. Therefore, the best way to save the soul was to try to take out the spirit. All those procedures cost the lives of thousands of people, and Mr. Tomanson was not the exception. This was the first case of schizophrenia, later classified as a distinct mental disorder by Kraepelin in 1887.
