“ Faron you must leave the gun fire will bring people.” Seth helped him to his feet.
“ I will send word of Mona. Go Now!!!!!”
Faron barely made it home before he collapsed.

Part Five

Mona slipped in and out of dreams. In them she thought that She saw Faron. But Faron looked strange. He seemed to be part man and part lion. She saw her self riding on the Lion’s back and she was not afraid.
Then she was being beaten by Talbot. Mona struggled against the ghost arms and cried out.
“ Mona it’s O. K. We have you.” Seth touched her face and kissed her cheek. Mona fell asleep. Her brother settled in the chair next to her bed. Adjusting his arm that was broken during the fight with Talbot.
“ Seth, the police want a statement.” Jacob whispered .
They went down stairs.
Chima had been hiding in the room .behind the heavy brocade curtains. She had come just after Faron had been taken to his room and Puma locked the door. She knew that He was very close to death and had been calling for Mona. Jumping on the bed Chima walked up and brushed against her face. Then settled into the chair.
“ Hello there. Back again? I am sorry I can’t find anything to eat.”
Mona’s eyes got wide as she watched the cat turn into a woman.
“Mona. Faron is near death He calls for you.”
“ Faron? ”
“ Yes. Please come. I know that you are hurt but he needs you. If you love him please come with me.”
Mona threw the covers off and dressed. With every move there was pain but Faron needed her. Then she followed Chima out the window that she herself had climbed down many times before. As they approached the fog Mona stopped.
“Come. Faron might be dying. Why do you hesitate?”
“ I am afraid of what is on the other side.”
“ It is the same . Trust me I will protect you.”
Mona held her breathe and stepped into the fog. She held on to Chima’s tail. After they past thru the fog Mona was struck by the beauty of the world that she had never seen because of the fog . Mona stood on a hill overlooking a house that was bright but seemed full of sadness. Following Chima she entered the house. A tall woman was standing waiting for her. She was wearing a dark dress with a hood. She turned and Mona saw a face that was so catlike but it was also so beautiful.
“Mona. Faron is gravely ill he calls for you. But I must warn you he is not as he has shown you.”
“ I know he is a lion. I have heard that your People are called shape shifters and that does not matter. ”
“ And you are not afraid?”
“ No. Faron loves me and I him. The stories are just that. I have seen His heart . He has my heart.”
Puma opened the door. A smell of Sage filled the air. Lying on a pallet of straw was Faron. His shape was caught between Terran and lion. Yet Mona only saw the man she was in love with. purple water and towels sat at the side of his pallet. She instinctively wet part of the towel in the water and cleaned his wounds. Tracing gently the ragged shapes then kissed each one. She laid down next to him. HE cried out.
“ Mona MY love you are here” He fell into a deep sleep. Puma closed the door.
“Maybe someday the love of these two might start a new world that includes all .”
“ Krista, friend all is well.’ As Puma hugged Mona’s Servant. She had followed them secretly in case Mona could not go on. The friends talked as they waited for a miracle. They waited all night and by dawn the door opened. Mona smiled and waved them in. There sitting up was Faron.

“Oh My Lord, Jacob. Mona is gone!!” Cora screamed.
“ Find Byron. He must have taken her” The male servants gathered and set off to find Greenway. Seth stayed behind. Not because of his broken arm but so that he could go to Faron’s . He waited then when it was safe he headed to the pond and the fog. Crossing over he knocked on the door. Krista opened the door and let him in.
“ you?” Seth was surprised.
“ yes, Faron is my God son. Mona is in his room .”
Krista opened the door. And Seth saw that Faron was sitting up cradling a sleeping Mona. He put Mona down and covered her with a blanket. Then he and Seth talked. They walked a bit and finally sat down on a tree stump. Seth told him of the outcome.
“I killed Talbot. His father is no where to be found. The whole town is looking for him.”
“ I should have done it.”
“ No. But he never raped her.”

Mona woke up alone. She folded the blanket and explored Faron’s room as she touched each object she could feel his touch. Passing by the mirror she saw what Talbot had done to her. She began to cry. A warm breeze touched her back and she turned to look out on the land that lay beyond the house. What she saw was amazing. It was shades of green and gold and quite lush. The sounds of creatures she had never seen or even heard floated on the breeze.
“I could live here and never want to leave.” She thought as a bird flew by the window.
Seth touched her shoulder and she flinched.
“Mona.”
“Seth you’re here” she hugged him.
“Careful my arm.”
“How?”
“ I fought with Talbot. He broke my arm and as he was about to kill me Faron stopped him. He shot Faron . But Faron knocked the gun away. I Picked it up and shot him.”
“ OH Seth.’ Mona patted his cheek.
“ Come home and talk to Mom and Dad.”
“ This all too much. I need time.”
“ I know but please come home.’
Mona walked away from him and looked out the window. She saw Faron and knew that to be really happy she needed to tell their parents.
Later that evening she sat with Faron and explained why she had to go. But that she would return and they would be together forever. Faron fell silent and tears burned at his eyes. But he understood that she needed to go.
Mona could see Faron. He was sitting on a hill facing the sun. She could see his head was hung down. How sad he must be. Mona was determined to return as soon as possible her place was with the man she loved more than life itself. They walked away from the place she wanted to call home in silence. Krista followed behind them.

As they entered the great hall Cora screamed then ran to hold Her daughter. Seth was embraced by his father. He was amazed at how old they seemed to have grown these few past days.
“ Thank Heavens that you both are alive!”
“ Oh Momma we are fine.”
“Talbot is dead . His father hung himself in shame.” Jacob stated in a tired voice.
“ I must return to the other side of the fog. The man I love is waiting for me.” Mona told them.
“ NO! you will not return. I will not have a child of mine be with one of THEM!” Jacob grabbed her hand and dragged her up the stairs with Cora crying as she followed. Seth raced along side him pleading with his father to talk this out as Mona struggled to get free. This reaction of her family scared her.
Krista had stood silent as she watched the chaos. When Jacob returned to the great room he banished her to the cottage.
“ I will deal with you later!”
Seth sat with his back against Mona’s door. He could her her sobbing and felt helpless that he could not help her at least for now. He was so tired and fell asleep there in the hall.
Cora went to her room and cried.
“ How could this happen?” She thought. She had hoped that Mona would never learn the truth.

Jacob sat in his chair and waited until he calmed down. The he went to the cottage. He needed to find out what Krista had told Mona. Using his key he let him self in. Krista was waiting.
“ I told her nothing if that is what you want to know. Perhaps it is time to do so.”
“ No. That would break Cora’s heart. How could I tell her that she is not our natural child?”
“ You knew someday that she might find out.”
“ Never. You should never have been allowed to stay. But I will fix that.” he moved to grab Krista. But she changed into a cat and managed to escape into the night. Jacob hoped that she would return to the other side of the fog. He locked the door and ordered the cottage burned to the ground. If there were any papers that held the truth they would be burned with the house.

Krista remained hidden in the garden. She watched as workmen put bars on the windows of Mona’s room the next morning. She felt angry and sad at the same time. When they finished she could see Mona sitting on the
