Mona and Faron
A love story between Them and Us.
Mona looked at herself in the still waters of the pond. She wondered if true love would ever find her.
Her world, Terra Earth had been split in two many centuries ago in a war called the Final Conflict.
Beings from a dying planet called Felid Cavior had come here to live. Much like the ancient Pilgrims she had learned about in school. But unlike the Pilgrims centuries ago they were unwelcome. Sometimes violently. The new commers were a race of Shape Shifters All they wanted was to live here in peace. A group who violently opposed them finally in a desperate attempt to destroy them all set off a Fire Storm that ravaged half the planet. Those of the new comers that survived were driven there. Gradually that side of the planet began to renew and became fruitful again. Yet there are still those who believe that they are still a menace. A fog still shrouds the dividing line between Our side and Theirs. Mona wondered what their side looked like.
As Mona continued to look at her reflection , She had never seen a Felidian and thought that the new comers might not look any different than she did.
“ Perhaps I could fall in love with one of them.” she thought.
“MONA! Stop admiring yourself. Let’s go.” her brother Seth yelled.
“Yeah, yeah. Coming.” She reached down and broke the image with her finger, then she got up and ran after Seth. Stopping for a moment to see a figure running the other direction. He was tall and had a nice build with hair that was a rich brown. He turned to look at her and she saw his eyes. They were so different. Instead of his irises being round like hers they were like a cat. Then he turned and was gone disappearing into the fog.
Faron emerged on his side of the fog. He stopped.
“ Who was that girl with Seth?” He wondered. He had to know who that girl was. The smell of cinnamon filled his heart. Seth had told him about the celebration tonight and he was determined to go. Perhaps she would be there
He had known Seth for a long time. They had met when they were about eight or nine. Faron had crossed the fog on a dare. There sitting in a tree was Seth. He climbed up and introduced himself. From then on they met secretly because of the way things were. Over the years they had shared many things .
PART ONE
As Mona and Seth walked trough the town square she saw that it had been decorated with strings of light bulbs, candles, gold, silver and colorful paper garland. The wind made the bells that were hanging on the trees ring. The smell of the pastries that were to served tonight seemed to fill the town square. It made her mouth water. Above the monument in the town center was a banner “ Happy 800 years Necedah”
“Mona! You would think that you were a small child.” Her mother chided. Mona looked in the hall mirror and saw that she was covered in dirt.
“ Sorry” But she smiled.
“Time for a bath girl. Your father has an announcement so hurry.”
The tub had been filled with very warm water and Krista, her maid had poured scented bubble bath into the water. She folded her dirty clothes and placed them on the table near the door then stepped into the water. The bubbles tickled her nose. On a table next to the tub she picked up a green bottle that held her favorite shampoo. Pouring it into her hand she began to work it through her long auburn hair. It smelled of cinnamon, her favorite scent. Then she piled the hair high on top of her head and closed her eyes. She saw the boy standing next to the pond with his hand outstretched. She woke with a start.
“ Girl, your parents are waiting.” Krista called. Mona left puddles on the floor. She hurried and dressed in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Seth stopped her in the hallway.
“Don’t tell Poppa about our visit to the pond, Please.”
“ Of course not. But tell me who was that you met?”
“ He is some one I know that’s all. But keep this a secret O.K?” He looked at her searching for an answer.
“ I will keep it. You are my best friend.” Seth leaned into her ear and spoke in a whisper.
“ His name is Faron.“ With that they entered the Great Hall. She had already decided to never tell anyone about it. Yet she could not stop thinking of the boy she saw.
Next to her Father stood a most disgusting man, Byron Greenway and his creepy son, Talbot. Why her father liked him she could never understand. Her mother was standing on her father’s Left with a funny look on her face.
Mona had hated Talbot since they were children. He had always bullied those smaller than himself. Talbot was rude and hated anyone he felt was smarter than himself. He liked to hurt creatures because he could. And there was no telling who or what he may hurt next. She had a pet dragonfly named PIPIP that Talbot had tried to kill once .
The dragonflies were remnants of the world before the Fire Storm. Back then they were small and were considered useless insects. After the Final conflict radiation had mutated many creatures. Some types of dragon flies grew large enough to ride. They were used for patrolling the borders between US and THEM. And for carrying messages between towns and villages. In the summer they were allowed to fly inside Her fathers large Manor house. The breeze created by their wings cooled the house. Dragon flies that large were few and Talbot seemed to enjoy the torture he inflicted on those he managed to catch.
“ Mona, my Dear come sit by me.” her Father Jacob called. She hurried and sat at his feet. He looked down at her with a smile.
“ I have a announcement. Talbot has asked for Mona’s hand and I have agreed.” He was greeted with silence.
Greenway slapped Jacob on the back. Talbot looked out the window and picked his teeth. He didn’t care . But if the money Mona would get as a dowry was as big as he thought He figured he could put up with her for a while. He still planned on carrying on as before. Parties, women and lots of drink and hid drug of choice Cocaine. Those things made his life bearable.
“Welcome Talbot.” her mother walked over and place a quick kiss on his cheek. He wiped it off as she walked away. He walked over to Mona And whispered into her ear,
“ You are my property now. Remember that!”
Then he placed his fingers on her shoulder and squeezed so hard that they left black and blue marks. Mona squirmed under his touch. Seth watched as Mona rubbed her shoulder. Walking over to Talbot, Seth pushed him into the wall.
“ Do that again and I will make sure you never do it to anyone.”
“ I can’t help if she is a weakling!” He laughed. Then pushed past Seth and walked out . Just before he closed the door He shouted,
“ Anyway she is going to be my property and you have no say. See you tonight my love.” you could hear his laugh as he went down the stairs. Byron followed his son whistling all the way.
“ Oh MY a wedding. My little girl is getting married. There are so many things to do!” her mother seemed to float out of the room . She was in heaven planning parties was something she loved doing.
“Cora, my love. Spare no expense. This wedding must be the best.”
“Of course Jacob. The town will remember it for a very long time. I promise.” with that Mona’s mother swept out and began calling for the servants. Jacob kissed his only daughter on the top of her head and followed his wife.
Mona and Seth were the only ones left in the Great hall. He wrapped his arms around her and promised to find a way out . Mona ran to her room. Locked the doors and began crying. As she looked up into the mirror her face red and wet with tears was replaced with the image of Faron. This time she was standing along side him and they were hand in hand.
“ Unlock the door Mona I have your party dress.”
Krista brought in the dress she had been making for Mona. It was beautiful. It was the color of Cinnamon and soft as silk. The piping was gold and red. The large dragonfly that filled the bodice to the skirt was done in gold and green needle work. Krista had out done herself. Mona forgot the tears.
“ It is so beautiful Krista! You treat me like a daughter.”
“ Thank you. But why do you cry?”
“ Father has promised my hand to Talbot.” she said flatly.
“ Don’t worry miss. I am sure some one will kill him before you have to marry him.” Krista laid the dress on the bed. Then hugged the girl she had watched grow up and closed the door.
“Yes. Of course.” Mona thought and a smile came to her face. It was still early so she placed a few pillows on the windowsill and closed her eyes. She imagined that she was with Faron and they were happy.
The bells were ringing in the town square when she woke up.
As she put the dress on Mona decided not to let Talbot ruin this night. Mona looked at her self in the mirror and was excited at what
