Chapter 9

Mira watched Kayden walk to the bedroom doors open them and stop. He didn’t say a word or did anything before closing the doors behind him a moment later. And when he turned around there was agitation or maybe anger etched across his face.

“Get in bed.” He demanded his voice low.

“But you haven’t even answered of my first question yet. I thought you said I could—.”

“Tomorrow, now get in bed.” His tone was as menacing as artic ice.

She immediately got up and walked around the chair to climb into his massive bed, pulling the dark cover back before sliding underneath to sit. She wasn’t even sleepy.

She watched as he walked over to his mirror closet at the far wall on the other side of the bed, sliding the door open and walking in, his strides lethal and on a mission.

For the life of her she couldn’t understand what had happened? In that small amount of time he’d gone from an understanding, gentle man into a raging lunatic, barking orders with a lingering lethal promise if she didn’t comply. What had changed? Had someone been at the door and gave him bad news? No she hadn’t heard a single thing. So, what was he suddenly so upset about?

Kayden walked out of the closet a moment later wearing his black leather jacket and carrying a six inch knife in one hand before bending over to sheath it in his boot.

He was going to go kill somebody, she was sure of it. Perhaps in the same way he killed Dominique.

She let out a sigh. Dominique. She missed him, but quickly recovered into defensive mode when Kayden spoke loud and clear.

“I’m going to give you a forewarning. If you leave this room, you will regret it.” He said standing at the foot of his bed glaring down at her.

She stared up at him for a moment without responding.

“Tell me that you understand.”

She nodded.

“Say it.”

She frowned “I understand.”

And with that he turned on his heels heading out the bedroom doors, slamming them behind, and leaving her along in the dark room with only the whispering crackle of fire and the bathroom light on.

What the heck had she done to make him so angry? She had only wanted to know who would have made him take her from her complex. Maybe bringing it up had set him off. She didn’t know him very well and the sides to him she had seen had been an array of different emotions. Although, this was her second time seeing that darker side to him she wondered if it was common for him to be so changeable.

Beyond the double doors she could hear the deep voices of men, more then two or even three and she wondered where they were exactly and whom they were with. He hadn’t mentioned in detail about where they were other then the fact that this was his room. And he’d seemed surprised when she told him her complex was in France.

A cold ripple of fear started at the top of her head and moved down to her feet when the possibility that they were no longer in France crossed her mind. Kayden didn’t have an accent, French or any other dialect from surrounding countries. He spoke like an American.

She brought her knees to her chin and began to rock, bracing herself for the anxiety attack she knew would come. But nothing happened. She wasn’t calm by all means, mostly scared, though she thought for sure an anxiety attack was well over due considering her situation. But even at the apartment she’d been over come with fear. Fear for Dominique. Fear that the mission for Salut would not come to pass. Fearing the dark rising would take her place and that it would be all her fault.

She couldn’t allow that to happen. She would have to plan an escape but not tonight. Tomorrow night. When she had fresh clothes and could gather some food to take with her. When she had time to find an exit strategy and see just how many other men were in this building. It didn’t matter where she was Tomorrow night was the night.

Satisfied, with her preplanned event she slid her body further into the cover lying down and staring at the dark ceiling above her eventually closing her eyes before drifting off to sleep. That night she dreamed about Kaydens hands on her body, his kisses on her skin and a big black cat with gold eyes and a scar.

“…Cane is going to have your head if he finds out about this. How could you be so reckless?”

Mira shifted under the warm soft covers, lazily wondering what time it was and why Susan, one of the complex’s maids was speaking so loud while she was trying to sleep. She turned on her to other side.

“Would you keep your voice down.” A male voice replied. A familiar male voice. Kayden’s male voice.

Mira’s eyes popped open, but she didn’t move. She usually slept with her head under the covers and all she could see now was the morning light trying to seep through the dark covers.

He continued. “I told you this not so you could judge me, Kalan but because you wanted to know. Because you’re my sister.” He paused for a moment. “You know I can’t keep anything from you anyways. You always know when I’m lying.”

There was a feminine sigh before the woman named Kalan replied. “I’m sorry, I’m just worried for you that’s all. This whole situation seems so odd and I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

There was a moment of silence then Kayden said. “Everything is going to be fine, Kalan I promise. I can fix this.”

There was a moment of movement, then a shuffling of footsteps as his sister said, “I hope the cloths I brought fit her well.”

“They should be fine. Thank you for stopping by.” There was another moment of movement before the sound of the bedroom doors closed shut.

“Mira.”

He knew she was awake and there was no since in continuing to hide. She lifted the covers from over her head and pulled herself to a sitting position. In front of her standing with his arms crossed over his chest at the foot of the bed was the most beautiful, dangerous man she’d ever met. And a part of her leaped with joy inside to see his scarred face.

He’d pulled his hair back into a low pony tail today, wore a dark brown long sleeved shirt that hugged his broad shoulders and chest, and a pair of worn dark blue jeans that fitted his narrow hips perfectly. His shinny belt buckle in the front had a picture of a zodiac sign on it but she wasn’t sure which one it was. It was the one that looked like a bull with horns. Maybe Aires?

“How long have you been awake?” He asked.

He seemed to be in a better mood then the night before.

“Not long.” She said pulling back the covers to stand on the hard wood floor. She shivered, holding herself as the chilled room sent goose bumps rising over her skin.

He must have seen her because her rounded the bed approaching her and reached out his hands rubbing vigorously at both her arms.

“We usually don’t use the heater. Most of the rooms in the manor have a fireplace which keeps the rooms heated individually.” He dropped his arms and went to the nearest chair by the fireplace to grab a shinny black bag that had the name “Kalan’s Boutique.” written in gold on the side. “My sister wanted you to have these.”

Mira studied the bag, taking it to place on the edge of the bed before digging a hand in to pull out the soft material. She held up a black V cut sweater made of such soft material it seemed rather expansive. She looked to Kayden.

“Did she make this?”

“She’s always been the more creative on in the family. She started her little boutique about ten years ago. She’d been doing really well.”

There was defiantly pride in his voice for her and from what she heard earlier and she could see on his face now, they had a good relationship.

He continued. “There are a few other things in there. Get dressed and I’ll be back in a minute.” He instructed, giving her back a gentle touch before heading out of the bedroom.

Mira stripped from the T-shirt Kayden had given her last night and donned on the black-laced panties and bra, sweater, fitted blue jeans and the softest socks she had ever worn. She went to the bathroom and played around her hair that was an uncontrollable mess. Managing to pull her hair into a messy bun with one of the black pieces of lace that had wrapped around the tissue paper packaging the sexy underwear, she glanced at herself in the mirror before heading back into the bedroom.

The room wasn’t as dark as it had been last night. The sun seeped through the heavy curtains at the windows on each side of his bed. She opened them up to get a bit more sun into the room and was making up his bed when she heard a knock at the door. Upon opening she was greeted by her handsome kidnapper and his devilish smile.

“You hungry?” He asked, carrying with him a plate of food in one hand. And a glass of orange juice in the other He sure did feed her well. And her mouth watered when she saw the fresh fruit, blueberry muffin and a roll gracing its surface. She opened the door just enough to get a good peek outside before following his nod for her to sit at the leather chair like the night before. She’d just now noticed that the small table had been cleared of her previous meal.

Kayden watched her eat but this time it was making her uncomfortable.

“How come you aren’t eating with me?” She managed to ask through bites breaking the silence between them.

He simply said. “I already ate.” Then continued. “I apologize for my temperment last night. It was uncalled for and unfair. I should have let you ask your questions. You can ask them when you finish.”

She nodded and quickly finished up the fruit that was on the plate purposely leaving the roll and muffin to keep for later.

“You’re done?” He asked. “Already?” His smile was crooked as if he knew she was up to something.

“I’ll save it for later.” That was the truth.

“There is plenty of food in the house, Mira. There is no need to hoard anything. Eat”

“I’m full.” That was a lie.

He shook his head and rolled his eyes at that. “Fine.”

“Can I ask my question now?”

“Go ahead.”

“Where did you go last night?”

He paused for a moment either surprised by the question or not really wanting to answer
