Once Upon a Time...

There was a mother dragon and baby dragon. The baby always loved to watch his mother fly. It was extraordinary. Each dragon in the realm had a jewel placed on their chest just above their heart. A talented swordsman heard of this and started on his journey to find these bejeweled creatures. One misty morning, the mother dragon was flying and doing tricks for her young sons amusement. Though, she had to leave to find food for them both. The baby dragon went into the cave and waited for his mother’s return. As the sun started to lower that evening, the crafty swordsman came across the dark cave. Hoping to seek shelter, he went inside. When he saw the small dragon, he thanked the gods above for this gift. Sheathing his sword, he came up to the baby dragon. Raising the sharp weapon high above his head, he took aim upon the small creature. Striking down, he pierced the baby dragon in its heart, killing it instantly. He dug the jewel from the dragons’ chest and placed it safely into his pocket. When he went to take his leave, he did not realize the mother dragon had returned. When she saw what had come upon her baby, she turned her attention to the swordsman. With hate and loss in her eyes, she breathed out the fire from within. It burned the man’s clothes, seeping through to his skin, and finally to his bones. The only thing left besides the ashes was the small jewel. The mother dragon took the jewel and left the cave that night. She flew for days on end, not stopping once to rest or eat. She kept going until she arrived at the heart of the Dragons Cave. She passed many dragons of all shapes and sizes. Tears pricked her eyes as she passed the infants. Lying in the center was a large fire. She slowly approached the blazing pile. After so many days, she looked at her baby’s jewel. She allowed one tear to slide down her face as she tossed it into the flame. She waited. Minutes passed and nothing happened. She stayed put. It wasn't until the sun had peeked past the mountain top that the fire turned from the blazing red to a soft blue. She watched, her eyes shining as her baby stepped out of the fire. He blinked once. Twice. When he looked up and saw his mother, he bound into her arms. Oh, how he missed her!
