off her face.
“Relax kid. You’re going fine you just needed a break. You’re angry.”
“Was it that fucking obvious!?” She shouts angrily at Travis her eyes yellow with rage.
“Anna can you get a towel.” Travis says calmly to his wife.
She gets up and walks into the locker room.
“Krissy relax please.” Emily says rubbing her shoulder.
Anna returns with a cold damp towel and hands it to Krissy.
“I can’t rely on my own team how am I supposed to play against the other team.”
“Just relax they’re trying to make you quit. They don’t know what they’re possibly doing.”
Derek had just now gotten down from the bleachers and placed his hands on his sister’s shoulders.
“Relax there Krissy. She’s after your spot. Don’t let her have it.”
“We’re still ahead after those setbacks with them blocking your shot and letting the other team have the ball. And now we’re not.”
The other team had just gotten a three point shot and some free-throws thanks to Kate accidentally hitting one girls arm. They were now behind 5 points.
“You ready to go in?” Anna asked Krissy noticing the hair on her arms becoming less noticeable.
“Eyes?”
“They’re not that noticeable.” Travis jokes lightly.
“Yes because cat eyes are normal.”
“Just don’t let anyone look directly at them.”
“I’m ready then.”
“Get down there and wait for them to call you in. October , Emily you two go in for Jessica and Meg.”
“Keep Jessica.”
“You sure Kris?” Derek asks her looking at his aunt and uncle.
“Very.” She says in a voice he recognized very well. The beast in her was very awake and very angry.
She walks down there to wait with October and runs out ready to go as soon as the ref calls subs. She and Diamond get the ball down the court and a guard tries to stop Krissy. She gets around the girl and passes the ball. The shot made by October fails and the two teams fight for the ball. Krissy grabs it and twists away from another girl. On accident she looks up. The girl sees her eyes and lets go of the ball in shock screaming as Krissy takes off with the ball. The refs ignore her and the girl frantically waves at her coach for a sub.
“She saw her eyes.”
“Of course.”
The team sends in a sub and the coach questions the girl on what happened.
“Her eyes. Number one. Her eyes were yellow!”
“You’re seeing things just calm down get a drink. You’re probably just dehydrated.”
On the court the Tigers were finally back in the lead. Krissy passes the ball and Diamond shoots it. The ball bounces off and the other team gets it. Kate manages to block a pass at the other end and get the ball back. Once clear she passes it to Diamond. A guard stops Diamond and she passes it back over to Kate. She shoots and the buzzer sounds for half time.
“Alright girls the score is 32-28 let’s get a few more on them and then we will have them pinned.” Travis says once inside the locker room.
“When we go back out this is our line up.” Anna says pointing to the board.”
“Am I still in?”
“No that’s Kiva.”
“Alright.”
“Krissy how you feeling?”
“Hungry as hell.”
“Yea aren’t we all.”
“Let’s get back out there gang!”
The group heads out and Travis and Anna catch Krissy.
“How hungry are you?”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re eyes are still yellow.”
“I’m still angry.”
“Do you have anything to eat?”
“Not readily available.”
“Is anybody at your house?”
“No.”
“Anybody who can bring you something?”
“Not that I know of.”
“I’ll call Thomas he can get here pretty quickly.”
“Great.”
“Let’s go get out there. When he gets here it should be just before the fourth quarter.”
Anna and Krissy walk out to join the team. Travis calls his brother hoping he answers.
“Hey Travvy whatchya doing little brother?” Thomas asks in his deep voice.
“Thomas thank heavens you answered.”
“What’s going on?”
“We’re in the middle of a game and Krissy is hungry as hell and royally pissed off.”
“How close is she to trans?”
“She’s gotten a little furry around the hands but it went away. Her teeth switched and her eyes did. Her eyes won’t change back.”
“So in other words bring a damn meal that could fill her up.”
“Yes.”
“Keep her in the game. She’ll get angrier if you don’t get her mind busy. I’ll be there in 10 minutes ill bring it in in a black gym bag and take it into the locker room.”
“Alright.”
Travis hangs up looking at his reflection in the mirror gravely. He walks back out to join the team switching Diamond for Krissy right at the last second.
“Travis?”
“He’ll be here in ten minutes? Did you tell her parents?”
“I told Derek.”
“Good.”
“Why did you put her in?”
“He said keep her busy.”
“You put her in with a nice little snack.”
“It will have to be fine.”
“Travis!”
Travis looks up to see his brother and sister in law standing behind him.
“Come over here where we can discuss this more privately.” He says as he motions them over towards the locker rooms.
He tells them the situation and they look at Krissy as they watch the game. Jessica had just blocked another shot and Krissy’s fingernails had just popped the ball. Luckily it had been during a scrabble for the ball so nobody could clearly see what had happened.
“Travis she won’t last ten minutes. I doubt she’ll last five.” Trevor says looking at from his daughter to his brother.
“She’s just gotta last a little longer.”
The ball had just gotten stolen by the other team. Krissy took off down the court going so fast that she caught the person well before the half court line. She spun and shot the ball.
To everyone’s shock it made it.
The other team called a time out. Krissy skips going to the bench she storms right past her team and into the locker room. When she is just barely out of people’s site she starts to shift. Her uncle and parents watch as she pulls off her jersey and shoes leaving her in her shorts socks and an undershirt.
They quickly rush after the tail that had just disappeared into the door, grabbing the clothing as they went. Inside the locker room they find Krissy pacing the floor in the form of a panther. They slowly set her clothes down and lock the door.
“Krissy?” Derek asks her
The panther’s head shoots up to look at him. A slight growl is given in response and she keeps pacing angrily. There is a knock at the door.
“Travis it’s me open the door.”
The voice of Krissy’s uncle Thomas stops her in her tracks and she turns to watch as he walks in the door. She had always liked Thomas because he was a were and he somewhat understood what she was going through.
“Hey there pretty kitty wanna bite to eat?” He asks setting the bag on the floor.
“Thomas what’s in the bag?” Trevor asks his older brother worried.
“Just a snack. It’s only a small deer relax”
Krissy begins to pad her way over to them her eyes on the bag. Thomas opens the bag and pulls out the deer. She lets out a growl before grabbing it and dragging it back into the back.
“Does she think we’re gonna take her food?” Derek asks.
“She’s angry just let her relax.”
Within a little while the sounds of eating stop and footsteps are heard making their way back to them. Krissy is still in panther form and she looks at her brother.
“Kris you ok?”
She nods and walks forward rubbing her head against his hand. He scratches behind her ears and grabs the Jersey sitting on the bench.
“You gonna get up and put this thing on?” Travis teases her.
She shakes her head no and before anybody can do anything to stop her, she bolts out the door.
“Thomas stop her!” Trevor yells to his brother.
They rush out after her and get into the gym just in time to see her standing in front of Jessica who she’s got pinned against a corner. Derek runs forward and gets close before Krissy turns slicing at the air between them. The beast that lived within his sister had complete control so it seemed.
“Jessica just stay calm. She won’t hurt you.”
The cop standing next to the door had found his way into the gym and was standing with his gun pointed right at Krissy.
“Son is that your cat?” He asks Derek.
“No sir, I think it’s that one zoo escapee. I work there part time with the cats I think I can control her.”
Thomas walks up and Krissy hisses angrily at him. He ignores her and steps up and grabs her ear. Krissy looks at him angrily and he tightens his grip causing her to yowl in pain. She lays down and looks at him.
“Got her.”
“Sir are you a worker at the zoo?”
“No this is my cat. She got let out by the maid and must have made her way here. I’ll just take her home.”
“Sir you gave these folks quite a scare.”
He looks at Jessica. The girl is standing in the corner terrified. Thomas taps Krissy’s ear and she stands up pacing a few steps back and sits down. Jessica runs over to Derek and clutches him tightly.
“Officer that beast tried to kill me it must be put down!”
“If she was going to kill you, she would have.” Derek says looking at his sister as he pushes Jessica off of him.
“Come on cat lets go.” Thomas says tapping his leg before walking off.
Once in the parking lot Krissy shifts back and grabs her clothes. She puts her jersey and shoes on before jogging back into the building.
“You’re not going back in the game.” Her dad says to her as she walks in.
“That is my choice. She’s fine she can play she’s completely calm now.” Travis says to his brother. “Go on they’re about to start up the fourth quarter we’re behind, catch us up.”
Krissy rejoins the team looking at her friends. They knew what had happened and were laughing about it telling her what she missed. Jessica was angry about being laughed at and as they took their positions on the court she talked about almost dying.
The game ends with the Tigers winning 68-55 thanks to Krissy. And the team has a small celebration in the locker room.
“Good game girls despite the terror we had there for a few minutes.” Anna says to the group.
“No practice tomorrow by the way. Have a good weekend.” Travis says.
Everyone starts getting dressed once the coaches leave and Jessica starts complaining about having almost been eaten.
“You gave her something new to complain about you know.” October whispers to Krissy.
“My intention was to scare her shitless. It almost worked.”
“That’s mean.”
“I know.
“Relax kid. You’re going fine you just needed a break. You’re angry.”
